NBC may buy Microsoft's MSNBC.com stake

Partnership could be unwound this summer

NBC Universal is in talks to buy out Microsoft's stake in MSNBC.com, what remains of a partnership that dates back to 1996 when the cable news network and website were created.

NBC bought back most of Microsoft's stake in the TV channel in 2005. According to a story in Adweek, Comcast is conducting due diligence on taking sold ownership of the site as well and the partnership could be unwound this summer.

While an interesting proposition at the time, the partnership created some confusion for the name and the content. The cable network transformed itself into a liberal alternative to Fox News, while the site remained general interest. Comcast wants the site to be more of an extension of the network brand.
