Like their counterparts in the entertainment industry, the Hair and Makeup Guild had annual award ceremonies. After a ten year hiatus and a generous donation from Paramount, the guild threw a gala to honor the achievements of its members in film, television and commercials.
Master of Ceremony Tom Arnold kept the crowd entertained and kept the pace flowing, resulting in an evening of high honors that clocked in at 48 minutes, a record for the season. Rick Baker accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of Dick Smith who had succumbed to health issues that evening. Tearing up at the realization of the elder makeup master's fragility, Baker brought a smile to everyone by stating what Smith would say if he had been present: "Can I go home now?"
Prior to Gail Ryan receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, a video lip synch was preformed by a one of The Voice's makeup artists to his long time partner. The two men met on stage where the officially became engaged. The evening concluded with Johnny Depp receiving the Distinguished Artisan Award. Presenter Joel Harlow informed the crowd on of his happiest professional moments was witnessing Depp in full makeup and costume, completely transformed into Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean. "I love collaborating with you," responded Depp.
