Guillermo del Toro will receive the 2017 Filmmaker Award by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE). The award, to be bestowed at the MPSE Golden Reel Awards ceremony February 19th in Los Angeles, is presented to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the art of cinema..
The multi-hyphae director/screenwriter/producer del Toro is a master of horror, fantasy and science fiction, with films and series on his resume including "Crimson Peak", "The Devil's Backbone", "The Strain" and "Pan's Labyrinth" del Toro is a prolific and endlessly fascinating director. Del Toro was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. Early in his career, he worked as a special effects makeup designer and made a number of short films. Since "Cronos", his first feature that debuted in 1993, he's directed a wide variety of films, from comic book adaptations (Blade II, Hellboy) to historical, fantasy and horror films. Additionally, del Toro has produced many successful films including The Orphanage (2007), Julia's Eyes (2010), Biutiful (2010), Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011), Puss in Boots (2011) and Mama (2013). His first novel, The Strain, was published in 2009.
“Texturally and narratively, sound and image fuse in the cinematic experience,” said del Toro in a statement released by MPSE. “I have spent as much time on the mixing board as I have on a stage, shooting or in a color correction suite grading the final film. To paraphrase Mark Twain: ‘The difference between the almost right sound and the right sound ‘tis the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning’ I am thus delighted and honored to receive this award from my colleagues and partners in the storytelling experience.”
